Several days ago, the garbage sorting performance contest “Beautiful Life from Garbage Sorting” was held at the Wanda Square of Jiaxing Economic and Technological Development Zone. The garbage sorting staff and contestants form the whole city rallied to demonstrate and discuss how to sort out garbage through artistic performances. The actors and actresses from Jiashan County performed the skit “Much Benefit of Garbage Sorting” to tell how volunteers introduce garbage sorting knowledge and help residential quarters improve garbage sorting quality with local dialects. The publicity team from Xiuzhou District demonstrated “significant garbage sorting” in the form of line dances.

Themed by “Beautiful Life from Garbage Sorting”, Garbage Sorting Performance Contest of Zhejiang is jointly directed by Zhejiang Civilization Office, Zhejiang Garbage Sorting Office and Zhejiang Daily Press Group to find out fashion and art elements in garbage sorting. The contestants are recommended by all regions.

“We hope this contest can fully demonstrate the new achievements made by Jiaxing in garbage sorting, show the public how garbage turns into treasures, improve people’s sense of garbage sorting and help them form the good habits of garbage sorting,” said Wu Xiuquan, executive deputy director of Jiaxing Garbage Sorting Office. According to him, this contest aims to add new meaning to the garbage sorting in a fashionable and innovative way, provide a bigger platform for people to participate in garbage sorting activities and enjoy the benefits from the garbage sorting. 

Now in Jiaxing, dropping garbage based on its sorts has become residents’ new fashions. In the first nine months of 2020, Jiaxing finished the provincial garbage sorting tasks set forth for 2020. The urban garbage amount achieved a negative growth of 7.13% year on year. 90% of urban household garbage was disposed according to its classifications. 51.66% of garbage were reused. All urban and rural regions participated in garbage sorting activities. 100 municipal-level and 60 provincial-level projects for public well-being were put into operation. 15 provincial-level pilot business streets and residential quarters were established respectively that are able to collect and clear up garbage during set time and in set places.

The garbage sorting seems to be something not so important, it is actually vital to all families and urban development. Its progress depends on people’s sense of the garbage sorting and the convenience of garbage sorting to a greater degree. For example, whether it is easier for residents to open trash cans’ covers or whether the areas where the trash cans are put are clean or not, etc. encourages or stops residents from dropping garbage according to its sorts.  

In recent years Jiaxing has implemented the “1+x” garbage dropping mode. “1” means building a garbage dropping station covering an area with a radius of 120 meters, and a worker is arranged there to persuade and guide residents to drop garbage. The station is open for three hours respectively in the morning and afternoon. “X” means the garbage sorting modes characteristic of each county, county-level city and district. 

根据计划，我市今年年底要完成建设定时定点投放模式小区1142个，加上前期完成的近200个省级高标准小区，“到今年年底，全市将有60%的小区实现定时定点投放，达到可追溯可计量的目标。”吴秀泉表示。

In addition to 200 provincial-level high-standard residential quarters where set-time and set-place garbage dropping modes are operating, Jiaxing will operate such a mode in another 1,142 residential quarters according to the plan. “By the end of the year, such garbage dropping modes will operate in 60% of the residential quarters of the whole city.” said Wu Xiuquan.

Tidy environment is a beautiful window of the city and a mirror of citizens’ quality. Citizens’ garbage sorting habits are of vital significance to improving a city’s environment, social civilization and grassroots social governance innovation. Since September 1, 2020, “Management Regulations on Household Garbage Sorting of Jiaxing” has been implemented. On September 2, Comprehensive Law Enforcement Bureau of Nanhu District punished those who broke the “Management Regulations on Household Garbage Sorting of Jiaxing” for the first time. On the same day, law enforcement officers found a supermarket near the farm produce fair of Nanhu District break Article 1 of the “Management Regulations on Household Garbage Sorting of Jiaxing” in their law enforcement examination, and punished this supermarket on the spot.

In the near future, the city will intensify efforts in law enforcement examination and inspection and publicity to guide more citizens to participate in garbage sorting activities.
