CPI of May Rises by 2.3% Year on Year in Jiaxing

In accordance with the CPI released by Jiaxing Investigation Team of the National Bureau of Statistics, the CPI of urban areas of Jiaxing in May grew by 2.3% year on year, 0.9 percentage point lower than that of April, and it was 0.1 percentage point lower and 0.6 percentage point higher respectively than those of national and provincial averages. The month-on-on-month CPI dropped by 0.9%, but the drop extent was 0.2 percentage point faster than that of April; and the prices of food & tobacco & wine, services and industrial products fell by 2.3%, rose by 0.2% and fell by 0.8% respectively.

From a year-on-year perspective, the food prices rose by 10.3%, contributing 2.71 percentage points to the rise of the CPI; the prices of meats and fresh vegetables respectively rose by 50.1% and 6.6%, jointly contributing 2.12 percentage points to the rise of the CPI; the grain prices remained the same, but the prices of fresh fruits, eggs and aquatic products decreased by 27.1%, 6.4% and 3.5% respectively; the prices of non-food commodities fell by 0.5%, contributing 0.37 percentage point to the decline of the CPI. Among the prices of eight categories of commodities and services, the prices of six rose and two declined. The prices of food & tobacco & wine rose by 9.3%, the highest growth of all; the prices of other products & services rose by 7.1%, and clothing by 3.7%, education and culture and entertainment by 2.4%, medical treatment and health care by 2.1%, and daily necessities and services by 0.9%; but the prices of transportation & communication and housing fell by 6.5% and 2.3% respectively.

        From a month-on-month perspective, the pork prices fell for the third consecutive month due to the sufficient supplies of pork reserves and low season for the pock consumption in summer. The pork prices began to fall in mid-February, and fell by 7.3% in May, 1.5 percentage points higher in drop extent than those of April; the vegetable prices fell further to 6.2% in May due to effective prevention and control of the covid-19, recovery of vegetable transportation and sufficient vegetable supplies for growing temperatures, 3.2 percentage points higher in drop extent than those of April. In addition, the prices of fresh fruits plummeted by 13.3% due to enormous production of bananas and watermelons and large base quotas of the previous year. In summary, the prices of food, tobacco and wines of the urban areas dropped by 2.3% month on month, 1.1 percentage points faster in drop extent than that of April.

        Compared with those of April, the prices of industrial products in May fell by 0.8% and those of service items rose by 0.2%; clothing prices fell by 1.4% due to the decline of raw materials; gold prices rose steadily and the prices of gold ornaments rose by 1.5% arising from the global spread of the covid-19 pandemic, global turmoils, economic slowdown and deprecation of the US dollar; air ticket prices rose by 6.8% due to the progress made in the prevention and control of the covid-19 pandemic and gradual recovery of trips.

In May, the CPI of the urban areas fell by 0.9% month on month. Among the prices of eight categories of commodities and services, the prices of six fell and two rose; the prices of food, tobacco and wine fell by 2.3%; the prices of clothing, transport&communication, medical treatment & health care, daily necessities & services and housing declined by 1.4%, 0.8%, 0.2%, 0.1% and 0.1% respectively; the prices of other products & services, and education & culture & entertainment rose by 0.9% and 0.4% respectively.
