Xiashi colored lantern making originated in Xiashi Town, Haining City of Zhejiang Province 1200 years ago. And it became famous early in the years of Qianfu in Tang Dynasty when Xizong was the emperor. Later in Southern Song Dynasty, Xiashi colored lanterns were ranked as tribute articles for the court. Xiashi colored lanterns are famous for the “eight-character skill and stitchwork patterns”. They are mainly made of rice paper, sawali, lead wire and are made with eight skills: drawing, bending, engraving, fastening, embroidering, backing up, pasting and tying. Reflected by the light, the pictures are vivid, and look as if stereoscopic. The lifelike, florid and exquisitely carved pictures are typical of Xiashi colored lantern making.
