Jiaxing is a prefecture-level city under Zhejiang Province. Under its jurisdiction there are two districts Nanhu and Xiuzhou, two counties Jiashan and Haiyan, and three county-level cities Pinghu, Haining and Tongxiang. In Jiaxing there were 42 towns, 30 sub-districts and 1,280 urban and rural communities, including 855 administrative villages as of December 31, 2024.

As of November 30, 2024, the registered population of Jiaxing stood at 3,786,556, an increase of 18,912 over the previous year; the population statistics showed a birth rate of 5.75‰, a mort ality rate of 6.84‰ and a natural growth rate of -1.08‰; new in-migrants and new out-migrants totaled 37,335 and 14,238 respectively, resulting in a mechanical growth rate of 6.12‰.
